Too often, when the stroke survivor sets off on their journey into the land of Physical Therapy, there is a tremendous amount of doubt if it will ever work. I have met so many stroke survivors, that stop doing Physical Therapy, because they are not seeing any benefit. Stroke is a very shady player. It tells you over a long period of time that this thing called Physical Therapy will not work. They tell themselves this, because, it seems so trivial at times, the things that we have to do, that stroke tells our highly developed mind, that this will never work.
Take comfort, this is not at all true, but a perception that stroke casts upon us. If we disregard Physical Therapy as some form of black magic, sorcerers will come down and condemn us to a life of nothing more than where you are. You can not outcast Physical Therapy because, You do not think it is working. We all want to get there fast, (recovery) and sometimes give up too soon. Giving up, is not an option and one must dedicate themselves to the therapy to get better. Do not make the mistake that you know better and that it is not working. Physical Therapy is a science and for us, not a choice. One simply must go through the rigors of Physical Therapy.
My own Physical Therapy could have been done quicker, had I accepted it's time proven techniques and made myself avail early treatment. When somebody asks you to lie on a mat while they work on stretching your muscles, you may doubt that this will work. Again, it is your mind telling you that, not the Therapy. This science works, so do not give up on it. Embrace Therapy, as the thing that will get you better along with your own personal commitment.
Try your best every day. Keep that spirit alive. It will help you travel through the land of Physical Therapy. Go through all those things that you consider trivial and it will pay off. There are people that we have followed, who completely blew off therapy because they had to wear a brace. They were completely adamant about this and refused to go to Physical therapy. These people become their own worst enemy. It's okay if you are happy where you are. But to give up therapy, because you feel it is doing nothing, is ridiculous. These are the same people, who become mad at their stroke. Stroke is not a choice it is, a challenge and must be addressed on a daily basis.
I can speak to this personally. I was paralyzed and walk normally today. It was a long time effort of doing things I didn't want to, but it works. Embrace Physical Therapy, you will be happier in the long run. If you have run out of insurance for Therapy, there are things you can do yourself. Look at the things for home article.
